The Denmark-America Foundation is a private foundation from 1914. Her Majesty Queen Margrethe of Denmark is patron of the Foundation. The purpose of the Foundation is to "(..) create stronger ties between the USA and Denmark, especially through educational exchange". Through its work which includes grants, advising and the trainee program, the Foundation has established close relations with the Danish business world and the Danish educational institutions. The Foundations has its own grants and programs, but also is in charge of finding and nominating candidates for other organizations such as American Scandinavian Foundation’s grants to Danes, and Thanks to Scandinavia, Inc.’s grants to Danes.
The Danish Fulbright Commission and the Denmark-America Foundation are two independent organizations, sharing a secretariat and different tasks.
Historically at its outset DAF modelled itself after the American Scandinavian Foundation in New York. Similar organizations to DAF developed in the other Nordic countries as well. Despite no actual or legal connections, these different foundations have always considered one another as sister-organization.
